About the chair

The mission of the chair International and European Data Privacy and Security Law is to support and carry out academic research and education at the interdisciplinary Research Group on Law Science Technology & Society (LSTS, created in 2003) within the Faculty of Law and Criminology on the topic of International and European Data Privacy and Security.

Collaboration and platform

The chair aims to strengthen the links and support the collaboration between researchers in the field of Law & Technology Law. It also wants to create a platform located in Brussels for research involving institutional and private stakeholders.

Forum

The chair provides a forum for exchange of academic know-how, for mutual access to academic and scientific resources and for top-level training and education of students and young professionals in the domain of International and European Data Privacy and Security Law.

Actions

1. Brussels Privacy Hub (BPH), the first European academic privacy research platform of global stature. Located in the capital of Europe, BPH is on the one hand ideally positioned to engage EU and other international policymakers, data protection regulators, the private sector, and NGOs. On the other, the platform is set to perform innovative, cutting-edge research on important questions of data protection and privacy law and policy.

Christopher Kuner

Christopher Kuner is an internationally-recognised expert in data protection and privacy law with 20 years’ experience working in academia and the private sector, and with international governmental institutions.

Christopher obtained his law degrees at the University of Notre Dame (J.D. in 1984) and New York University School of Law, LL.M. in International Legal Studies (1991). He has also studied at the Law Faculty of Cologne University, Germany (1984-1985). He is a member of the bars of the Brussels B-List and of the New York Bar.

Christopher is leading academic in the area of international privacy law, and author of classic books on the topic, such as:

  • Transborder Data Flows and Data Privacy Law (Oxford University Press 2013)
  • European Data Protection Law: Corporate Compliance and Regulation (2nd edition, Oxford University Press 2007); Chinese version published in 2008 by Law Press China
  • European Data Privacy Law and Online Business (Oxford University Press 2003)
  • Internet Marketplaces: The Law of Auctions and Exchanges Online (w. Prof. Christina Ramberg, Oxford University Press 2002)
  • Internet fΓΌr Juristen (Verlag C.H. Beck 1996, 2nd edition 1999)

He is Doctor in Law (University of Tilburg 2012) and also Senior Privacy Counsel with the Brussels office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. For 10 years he was Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce's Task Force on Privacy and Personal Data Protection.

Kuner has participated for years in the work of international organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United National Commission for International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and the Council of Europe. He also works closely with international humanitarian organisations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He is founder and editor-in-chief of the journal International Data Privacy Law.

Prof. dr. Paul De Hert

Prof. Dr. Paul De Hert is a full-time professor at VUB and associated professor at Tilburg University. He is a human rights and law and technology scholar working in the area of constitutionalism, criminal law, data protection and surveillance law. 

Paul is Director of the Research Group on Fundamental Rights and Constitutionalism (FRC), Director of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Law (Metajuridics), Co-Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub and Co-Director of the Research Group Law Science Technology & Society (LSTS).
