STEAM Academy
The VUB, led by B-PHOT Brussels Photonics, is launching an educational center in Gooik where science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics meet. Spurred by B-PHOT research director Hugo Thienpont, Nathalie Debaes and Tine De Pauw, the project unites VUB faculties to launch the academy of the future.
Help build the academy
Whoever contributes his/her bit to the fund helps to fill the academy.
Specifically, this means:
- laser cutters, 3D printers, milling machines for the fablab
- drawers, machines and tools for the bio hacklab
- the latest technological educational gadgets for the classroom of the future.
In addition to primary and secondary school students, the STEAM Academy aims to attract young people, teachers and local residents, as well as entrepreneurs from the region. Students and scientists from VUB will be able to put their theory into practice. The university provides multipurpose rooms and an auditorium for 150 people. In order to organize different activities, these spaces will be modular. Besides a Bio Hacklab, a VUB FabLab will also be opened for interested creative people.
"VUB wants to give STEAM the attention it deserves, but also hopes to add a concrete and tangible interpretation. Gooik is the perfect central location to do exactly that. The Academy will be a place where everyone can develop 21st-century skills with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind. Entrepreneurship will be stimulated and interdisciplinarity will be central. VUB offers a broad range of scientific disciplines, thanks to the contribution of researchers and research groups from all VUB faculties. B-PHOT will coordinate the project."
