The most sustainable swimming pool in the region
The VUB swimming pool is a model of social innovation and sustainability. In addition to subsidy providers, donors, alumni, and numerous private sponsors ensured that the new swimming pool became reality. We are very grateful to them at VUB.
Together, we built the most sustainable swimming pool in the region. Good facilities, extensive opening hours, and democratic fees make this a popular, accessible swimming pool. Each year, more than 130,000 swimmers dive into the water of VUB swimming pool.
Our facilities
On Friday 2 February 2018, VUB held opening ceremonies for its sparkling new swimming pool on the Etterbeek campus. Since that day, you can swim in a large 25-metre pool and a smaller 13-metre pool. The small pool has a movable floor. This allows us to adjust the depth, for example, for babies, toddlers, seniors, and people with disabilities. With spacious changing rooms, our own swimming school and the expansion of our programme of services to include various aqua fitness activities, we meet the needs and wishes of our many swimmers.
Fast forward to:
The swimming pool is part of the Living Campus Walk, a green walk through the VUB site.
Financial support
The renovation of the VUB swimming pool cost 8 million euros. Over half of this comes from state contributions from such sources as the Brussels-Capital Region, the Flemish Community Commission, and the Flemish Community. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) also provided significant financial support from European and Brussels funds. Donors, alumni, and numerous private sponsors (International School of Brussels, FPIM, Yakult, IPG, Vivaqua, and Chaudfontaine) were also important partners in the realisation of the revamped VUB swimming pool.
