VUB criminologists Kristof Verfaillie and Kasia Uzieblo argue in Brussels city media BRUZZ for a more scientific approach to radicalisation. "Knowledge of risk profiles is too low"
Kristof Verfaillie: "There are scientific models on which you can base a threat assessment, but today they are not really used.”
Kaisia Uzieblo: “We still hear too often that external signs are looked at, such as growing a beard or going to the mosque. That can be a signal of radicalisation, but not necessarily. And whether someone is really a risk also depends on their personal characteristics and environmental factors. How we get all the information together to make such an assessment soundly, we need to analyse in more depth."
