The VUB abortion centre in Brussels, in collaboration with umbrella organisation Luna vzw, has launched a campaign for a major reform of Belgian abortion law. The objective is to eliminate the legally required six-day reflection period before an abortion can be carried out and extend the permitted time limit for termination of pregnancy. In doing so, they aim to improve access to abortion care while stressing the importance of accessible contraception and adequate information provision.
The centres point out that a change in legislation will not necessarily lead to more abortions, but rather contribute to better care for women in Belgium. They aim for a society where women have full autonomy over their reproductive choices, supported by accessible and empathetic healthcare.
A key focus of the campaign is to provide educational materials and organise activities that raise awareness about reproductive rights and health. In addition, the centres advocate for more support and resources for women in difficult circumstances. They want women to receive more support and better aftercare, which are essential for emotional and physical well-being.
The campaign aims not only to raise public awareness but also to urge policymakers to take action. By changing legislation, they hope to improve access to abortion care, enabling women to make informed and supported decisions about their own bodies and futures. As part of their campaign, visitors to the Abortus en dan website can write a postcard detailing what they would like to see improved when it comes to abortion. Before the elections in June, the cards will be sent to policymakers.
